Welcome to White Township
Our energetic community is not only the geographic heart of Indiana County, it is the economic, educational and population center of the area.
Surrounding the county seat, Indiana Borough, our township is a thriving municipality. Both the township and the borough host sprawling Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the second-largest of 14 schools in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. IUP’s Kovalchick Convention & Athletic Complex, with the largest indoor basketball floor and convocation center for miles around and a state-of-the art technology-based conference center, was built in 2011 in White Township. The honored and respected Indiana Area School District educates our community’s children at two elementary schools and Indiana Area Senior High School all in our township. A modern new Indiana County campus of Westmoreland County Community College is now under construction in White Township on the grounds of Indiana County Technology Center, an adult and public secondary skill education center.
With a population of 15,495 (2020 Census estimate) more people call White Township home than any other community in Indiana County.
White Township is accessible. Two major four-lane highways, U.S. Routes 119 and 422, intersect in the township. The only airport capable of sustaining commercial air traffic in the area, the Indiana County-Jimmy Stewart Airport, is in White Township.
This is the healthcare center of Indiana County. The Indiana Regional Medical Center, its Ambulatory Surgical Center, the IRMC Physicians Group, the Human Motion Institute and the central station of Citizens’ Ambulance Service form a comprehensive healthcare campus in White Township.
The spacious Windy Ridge Business & Technology Park is host to the giant URBN (Urban Outfitters) national distribution and fulfillment center and provides scores of acres of ready-to-build sites for new and growing businesses and industries.
Busy Oakland Avenue connects three major shopping complexes on a main link from the highways to the IUP college campus and the county government center in Indiana. It is one of two major commercial business districts stretching through White Township. Many other pockets of commerce dot our community.
Sports and recreation enthusiasts find competitive athletic leagues, organized community activities, and personal enrichment opportunities both indoors and outdoors at the 91-acre White Township Recreation Complex, Kennedy-King Park, Getty Heights Park, Fourth Ward Park and the celebrated 250-acre White’s Woods Nature Center with miles of hiking trails and forest study areas. Two private golf courses, the foundation-sustained Indiana County Fair Grounds and outdoor swimming pool, and the YMCA of Indiana County and its facilities all are set within the borders of White Township.
Our neighborhoods consist of family-friendly communities, plans of luxurious homes, affordable townhouse living, college-style efficiency housing complexes, quiet retirement villages and traditional “Elm Streets” that blend with our Indiana Borough neighbors.
The quiet farmlands and woodlands of Brush Valley, Cherryhill, Rayne, Washington, Armstrong and Center townships surround our community.
You’re invited to White Township. You’ll find a lot of good reasons to be here – and a lot of great reasons to stay.
