Oakland Avenue closing, detour planned

One of the major detours of the Oakland Avenue widening project by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation begins next week.

Oakland Avenue, a main artery between Indiana, the IUP campus and the Route 422 interchange, will be closed for the replacement of a box culvert that channels McCarthy Run under the road near Roseann’s Everyday Gourmet, Kwik Fill and Indiana Mall.

Motorists will be directed away from the work area from Monday, July 19, until the following week, according to Gulisek Construction, the general contractor.

Gulisek will post a detour for outbound traffic onto Rose Street, Wayne Avenue and Indian Springs Road. Inbound traffic will be sent onto Indian Springs Road, Wayne Avenue and Rose Street to return to Oakland Avenue.

Southwest-bound residents, shoppers and workers in the busy commerce district of Oakland Avenue may travel as far as Rustic Lodge Road and McKnight Road. Local traffic moving northeast from the PennDOT intersection may reach the main entrance to Indiana Mall.

The culvert replacement work is expected to take a full week. Other traffic configurations may be announced before July 26.
